Join us on July 4 for a "Patriot Picnic"
We defend--and celebrate--American democracy on the day of her birth.
I am a Founders Fan Girl. Ever since my parents took me, at age seven, to see 1776 on Broadway, I have been obsessed with all things American Revolution. My favorite historical figures are John and Abigail Adams, whose love letters to one another while John was away on the business of nation-building, provide an irresistible window into an unprecedented time. As Benjamin Franklin says to a frustrated John Adams in 1776, “John, really. You talk as if independence were the rule. It's never been done before. No colony has ever broken from the parent stem in the history of the world.”
And yet these colonies did break from the mighty British empire 249 years ago when they declared, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”
What followed has been an admittedly imperfect practice of these principles.
The principles themselves, though, have never been so challenged as they are today, which is why Indivisible Mobile has taken to the streets six times in less than five months to protest the assault on our democratic ideals by the Trump regime and its Republican enablers.
And on July 4, 2025, we are going to take a breath and CELEBRATE the thing we are joined in defending! Please gather with us in Cathedral Square at noon on Independence Day for a brief program and time to be together. The program will consist of:
The Pledge of Allegiance
A participatory reading of the Declaration of Independence (excerpts)
The National Anthem
And, because this nation is a nation of immigrants, we will pause to note the contributions of immigrants to the greatness of America, and share some information about what can be done to protect our immigrant friends and neighbors.
We’ll also have patriotic music and sparklers! And everyone is welcome to bring a picnic and remain in the square together afterwards.
