Studies have shown that receiving a handwritten postcard in the mail has a positive effect on the likelihood of the recipient getting registered to vote and turning out for elections. And in our current political climate, where races are often won or lost by tiny margins, every vote matters more than ever, especially as Republicans work to make voting more difficult for so many populations!
We meet every Wednesday from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Mobile (6345 Old Shell Rd, Mobile, AL 36608) to write postcards to voters (or when we are between elections, to our representatives). Every week we have a specific campaign to work on and addresses of the right people to contact (provided by partners Postcards to Voters and Activate America).
For example, on June 4, we wrote to voters in Florida to remind them to renew their Vote By Mail status, and included the phone number for them to call. Our small group turned out 50 postcards in a single hour, and across the country, other groups were doing their part as well. On May 28, we wrote to registered Democrats in Ohio urging them to contact their (vulnerable) Republican Senator John Husted and ask him to get the Senate to DO THEIR JOB and oppose Trump’s damaging tariffs. And in doing so, perhaps we reminded those Democrats that Husted is not working for them and needs to be voted out of office in 2026!
This is the perfect activism opportunity for those who can’t attend protests, don’t have much money to contribute, or don’t care for phone-banking or canvassing. I know that I find it very satisfying to go straight from Postcards for Democracy to the post office to stuff handfuls of postcards into the mailbox! I often wonder what the mail carrier thinks every Thursday morning when he collects all of our cards and sends them on their way, making our voices here in Mobile heard. : )
