Friends,
The Indivisible Mobile team is watching events in Los Angeles with concern. Clearly this administration is eager to ramp up the tensions that were actually caused by the actions of ICE and Homeland Security, and it’s becoming harder to know if our guaranteed First Amendment right to peacefully assemble and “to petition the Government for a redress of grievances” will be respected.
All the more reason, we say, to keep up the protests! However, we want to be smart. Here are things we can all do to stay safe:
Please leave the children and the dogs home on Saturday, June 14.
Don’t share details about protests on social media in public groups. There is no point in giving potential counter-protesters (some of whom seem eager to start trouble) information about where we will be and when!
Do not engage with counter-protesters or hecklers. Giving them attention feeds their rage and their sense of self-righteousness.
Keep your eyes open. If you see something that concerns you, report it to one of the organizers, identifiable in yellow safety vests, or to a marshal (orange vests), whichever is quickest.
Commit 100% to peaceful, non-destructive behavior at these events, and help your fellow protesters to remember and stay true to this ideal. It just takes one protester acting out to get us all declared “violent,” which could lead to a crackdown (which might be coming anyway, but let’s not be the excuse).
For additional guidelines, take a look at How To Stay Safer at a Protest and Digital Security Guidelines for Protests from the American Friends Service Committee.
Indivisible Mobile has been granted the appropriate permits for this event, and the police have been notified that we will be protesting. If you are approached by the police, please stay calm and respectful and refer the police to an organizer (yellow vests).
